Balkancar Record Co. is a Bulgarian manufacturer of forklifts and other materials handling equipment. The company belongs to the state-owned Balkancar Holdings Co.; which has owned as many as 13 other Bulgairian materials handling companies.[1]

[edit] History

Balkancar Record Co., based in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, was established in the mid 1950’s.[2] In 1965, the Balkancar Holdings Company was established, and Balkancar Record Co. became a subsidiary. In 1989, the holding company was converted to a joint stock company called Balkancar Holding EAD, with the Bulgarian government as the sole shareholder.[3]

In the late 1980’s, Balkancar Record’s two largest markets were Eastern Europe and the member nations of the Comecon. The Comecon was an economic organization of communist nations meant to promote trade. Prior to its disbandment in 1991, member nations included the U.S.S.R., Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland, Romania, East Germany, Mongolia, Cuba, Vietnam, Albania and Yugoslavia.[4]

Balkancar forklifts peaked in popularity in 1994, when 4316 units were produced. However by 2001, sales had fallen drastically and only 400 lifts were manufactured. [5]

In 1997, Balkancar forklifts began to be sold in England, Italy, Germany, Spain, Turkey, the Czech Republic, and Croatia.[6]

[edit] The Current Situation

Among the 14 forklift manufacturers who used to make up Balkancar Holdings Co., only two companies remain: Balkancar Record and Balkancar Sredets. Both companies control their own distribution, and sell primarily to former members of the U.S.S.R.[7]

On April 30, 2003, Balkancar Record was recognized by the Bureau Veritas with an EN-ISO 9001:2000 quality management certificate.[8]
