Ballast is a term used to describe:

  • A coarse gravel or aggregate used as the foundation for building roads and railways
  • A course aggregate comprised of sandy gravel used in the making of concrete
  • An object that provides or enhances stability or weight
  • Any type of dense heavy object or material used to stablize a ship or cargo carrying vessel, such as lead or iron pigs. [1]
