The Caterpillar 16H motor grader was introduced in 1995 as the replacement for the Caterpillar 16G. It was manufactured in the USA only.

The16H has a 3406 turbocharged engine producing 275 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It has an eight speeds forward, eight reverse direct drive powershift transmission. It comes standard with a PPPC hydraulic system, integrated engine compartment doors, contour seat, and modified operator station.

The 16H was given a 6ZJ serial number prefix.

In 1996 an emission-regulated engine with aftercooling was made standard, beginning with 6ZJ00078. Caterpillar added extended life coolant, beginning with 6ZJ00169.

In 1997 Cat added nylon plastic drawbar/circle wear inserts and new battery boxes, and modified the fuel-sending unit, beginning with 6ZJ00238. An optional 12-volt power port, circle drive slip clutch, and scheduled oil sampling ports were added, beginning with 6ZJ00331.

In 1999 the differential spider gear bearing material was changed from aluminum bronze to manganese bronze to decrease the material transfer from the bearing to the spider leg, beginning with 6ZJ00593.

In 2003 Caterpillar introduced a new 16H unit, with an ATS prefix. The new unit has a 3196 electronic engine with air-to-air aftercooling (ATAAC) producing 270 FWHP. It comes standard with a serpetine belt with automatic tensioner, a fuel water separator, enhanced vehicle styling, 500-hour oil change interval, modified remote engine oil drain, on-demand hydraulically driven “pull” fan, inside mounted air dryer, ground level fueling, left hand side centralized service access, sample ports on all systems, ground level coolant check, “Lube for Life” pump drive shaft, EMS III (electronic monitoring system), automotive-style fuses, electronic throttle, increased cab air flow to the windshield, electronic control transmission directional solenoids, and LED stop/turn lights. It is also available with two-level variable horsepower.

In 2003 Cat installed a modified parking brake control lever, beginning with 6ZJ01053 and ATS00213. Steering accumulators were added, beginning with ATS00221.

In 2006 an AccuGrade ready option became available, beginning with ATS00466. Cat modified the circle pinion, beginning with ATS00545.
