The Caterpillar 212 mobile excavator was introduced in 1984. It was manufactured in Germany only.

The 212 comes standard with a variable flow hydraulic system and pilot operated controls.

The 212 was manufactured in Germany, with a 3JC or 5DC serial number prefix.

The 3JC has a Deutz F5L912 engine producing 84 flywheel horsepower (FWHP).

The 5DC has a Perkins T4.236 engine producing 94 FWHP.

In 1985 Caterpillar added overspeed protection in reverse, beginning with 3JC00056 and 5DC00033.

In 1986 adjustments were made to the cab and travel control, and individually controlled outriggers became optional, beginning with 3JC00123 and 5DC00140. Cat also added new transmission rotating clutch housing, beginning with 5DC00162.

In 1987 a stronger boom nose and foreboom were added, beginning with 5DC00268.

Production of 3JC ended in 1990; 5DC ended in 1991.

The 212 was replaced by the Caterpillar 206B.

Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 800 Caterpillar 212 mobile excavators have been produced.
