The Caterpillar 214B mobile excavator was introduced in 1987 as the replacement for the Caterpillar 214. It was manufactured in Germany only.

The 214B has a Cat 3116 turbocharged engine producing 110 or 135 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It comes standard with an extended wheel base, wider carbody, new single main pump/load sensing, a pressure compensating hydraulic system, new cab, O-ring face seals in low/medium, pressure lines, redesigned boom and stick, enclosed oil disc brakes, on-the-go shift transmission, increased operating weight, and increased implement pressure with larger boom cylinders.

The 214B was manufactured in Germany, with a 4FC or 9MF serial number prefix.

The 9MF has 135 FWHP. It comes standard with a faster travel speed, greater engine and hydraulic cooling capacity, larger standard tires, and increased braking capacity.

Production of 214B ended in 1995.
