The Caterpillar 235B hydraulic excavator/front shovel was introduced in 1985 in the USA. Production began in Belgium a year later. It replaced the Caterpillar 235.

[edit] Features

The 235B has a 3306 turbocharged, six-cylinder engine producing 215 flywheel horsepower (FWHP).

The 235B was manufactured in the USA, with a 1FD or 7WC serial number prefix; and in Belgium, with a 4ED or 9PC prefix.

The 4ED and 1FD units have a heavy-duty carbody strong enough to be used as a front shovel, mass excavator, or special application vehicle. It comes standard with travel circuit pressure, drawbar pull, and standard 30-inch (76-cm) double grouser shoes.

The 9PC only comes with 195 FWHP. It has a variable flow hydraulic system.

[edit] Modifications

In 1985 Caterpillar added new track rollers to the 7WC unit, beginning with 7WC00302.

In 1986 the 9PC unit had its horsepower increased to 215 FWHP, beginning with 9PC00277. Cat added Rex Roth track motors, beginning with 7WC00392 and 9PC00508.

In 1987 a sound suppressed cab was added, beginning with 7WC00561 and 9PC00534. Cat also added a new main control valve and increased hydraulic pressures, beginning with 7WC00678 and 9PC00644.

Production of 7WC ended in 1987.

Production of 235B ended in 1988; it was replaced by the Caterpillar 235C.

Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 2,500 Caterpillar 235B hydraulic excavators/front shovels have been produced.
