The Caterpillar 345B hydraulic excavator/material handler was introduced in 1997 in the USA and Japan. Production began in Belgium and France a year later.

[edit] Features

The 345B has a Cat 3176 engine producing 286, 290, or 321 horsepower (HP).

The 345B was manufactured in the USA, with a 4SS, 9GS, or 2NW serial number prefix; in Japan, with a 6MW, 6XS, 8KW, 5WS, 8RW, or 9CW prefix; in Belgium, with a 2SW prefix; and in France, with a 7KS prefix.

The 7KS, 6XS, 5WS, and 4SS units have a Rexroth pump. The 4SS also has a power and work mode selector with a new user mode, high stick and bucket forces, a level of operator comfort, integrated seat and console, air conditioner, serviceability from the ground, large lifting capacity, and low fuel consumption.

The 2SW has a heavy-duty upper frame, boom and hydraulic hoe. It has an operating weight of 106,260 pounds (48,300 kg).

The 9GS and 2NW units have a variable gauge undercarriage. The 2NW is a material handler unit.

[edit] Modifications

Production of 6XS and 9GS ended in 1999. Caterpillar

Caterpillar introduced 345B Series II in 1999 in the USA and Japan. Production began in Belgium in 2001.

The 345B II was manufactured in the USA, with an AGS, ALB, DCW, APB, or CFM prefix; in Japan, with a AKJ, ALD, AMD, AMN, AKX, AMJ, or AYR prefix; and in Belgium, with a CCC, FEE prefix.

The Japanese and American units have a higher power, larger fuel tank, larger swing motors for increased torque, and larger pumps for increased hydraulic flow.

The American APB and CFM units are material handlers.

The Belgian units have a heavy-duty undercarriage.

The AKJ, ALD, AKX, AGS, and FEE units have a fixed undercarriage. The ALB, DCW, APB, and CCC units have a variable gauge undercarriage.

The DCW unit has an operating weight of 111,980 lbs (50,900 kg).

The CCC unit has an operating weight of 107,800 lbs (49,000 kg).

The FEE unit has an operating weight of 97,130 lbs (44,150 kg).

Production of 6MW, 8KW, 5WS, 8RW, 9CW, 4SS, and 2NW ended in 2000.

Production ended in France in 2001.

Production of 2SW ended in 2004; DCW and CFM ended in 2005.

Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 6,800 Caterpillar 345B/345B Series II hydraulic excavators/material handlers have been produced.
