The Caterpillar 768B wheel dozer was introduced in 1971. It was manufactured in the USA only.

The 768B has a D343 turbocharged, after-cooled, six-cylinder engine producing 415 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It has a powershift transmission with electric or air start. It comes standard with rear disc brakes and pneumatic suspension.

The 768B was given a 79S serial number prefix.

In 1974 Caterpillar added a steel cab, foot brakes, and a modified brake system with emergency brakes, beginning with 79S00080.

Production of 768B ended in 1978; it was replaced by the Caterpillar 768C.

Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 100 Caterpillar 768B wheel dozers have been produced.
