The Caterpillar 825G compactor was introduced in 1996 as the replacement for the Caterpillar 825C. It was manufactured in the USA only.

The 825G has a 3406 engine producing 315 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It comes standard with a G-series cab, separate cooling system, integrated steering and transmission, and hydraulic controls and brakes.

The 825G was given a 6RN serial number prefix.

In 1996 Caterpillar added long life coolant antifreeze in the cooling system, beginning with 6RN00285. The maximum transmission gear was programmable with Electronic Technician (ET), beginning with 6RN00286.

In 1998 modifications were made to the implement control, beginning with 6RN00335.

Production of 825G ended in 2002; it was replaced by 825G Series II, with an AXB prefix.

The AXB unit has a 3406E air-to-air after-cooled (ATAAC) engine producing 375 FWHP. It comes standard with a three-speed planetary powershift transmission. It has an operating weight of 72,164 pounds (32,734 kg).
