The Caterpillar 960F wheel loader was introduced in 1993 in the USA, Belgium, and Japan.

The 960F has a 3116 turbocharged/aftercooled, direct injection engine producing 200 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It has a 4- to 4.2-cubic yard (3- to 3.2-m3) bucket capacity with an 11,800-pound (5,310-kg) payload and 9-foot, 10-inch (2.95-m) dump clearance. It comes standard with R134A refrigerant in the air conditioner.

The 960F was manufactured in the USA, with a 9ZJ serial number prefix; in Japan, with a 6XL prefix; and in Belgium, with a 4CL prefix.

In 1995, Caterpillar added a modular monitoring system with electronic analog gauges, noise reduced engine mounts, and silicon-bonded windshields, and modified the transmission access, beginning with 9ZJ00307.

Production in the USA and Japan ended in 1998.

Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 1,400 Caterpillar 960F wheel loaders have been produced.
