The Caterpillar 966G Series II wheel loader was introduced in 2000 in the USA as the replacement for the Caterpillar 966G. Production began in Japan and France a year later.

The 966G II has a 3176C engine producing 235 net horsepower (HP). It has an engine displacement of 2.7 gallons (10.3 L) and an air-to-air after cooler (ATAAC).

The 966G II was manufactured in the USA, with an ANT or ANZ serial number prefix; in Japan, with an AWZ or AXL prefix; and in France, with an AWY or AXJ prefix.

The ANZ, AXL, and AXJ units all have pilot-hydraulic implement control and hand-metering unit steering.

Production of 966G II ended in 2005.

The Caterpillar 966G II was replaced by the Caterpillar 966H.
