The Caterpillar 970F wheel loader was introduced in 1993 in the USA, Japan, and Belgium.

The 970F has a 3306 direct injection turbocharged, after-cooled engine producing 250 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It comes standard with five- to 5.5-cubic yard (3.8- to 4.2-m3) bucket capacity, 15,800-pound (7,110-kg) payload, and 10-foot, six-inch (3.2-m) dump clearance.

The 970F was manufactured in the USA, with a 7SK serial number prefix; in Japan, with a 7PL prefix; and in Belgium, with a 9JK prefix.

Between 1993 and 1998 Caterpillar added full hydraulic brakes, optional ether starting aid and air suspension seat, replaced CSC-based R12 with R134A refrigerant in the air conditioner, and moved operator horn control from the floor to the steering wheel, beginning with 7SK00224, 7PL00104, and 9JK00362.

In 1995 Cat added a modular monitoring system with electronic analog gauges, noise-reduced engine mounts, silicon-bonded windshields, and modified transmission access, beginning with 7SK00546.

Production ended in Japan in 1999.

Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 2,200 Caterpillar 970F wheel loaders have been produced.
