The Caterpillar D4 series C crawler tractor was introduced in 1959 in the USA. Production began in France a year later.

The D4 series C has a D330 four-cylinder engine producing 65 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It comes standard with a forward/reverse lever and direct drive transmission.

[edit] Configurations

It is available in two configurations: the standard model has a track gauge of 44 inches (112 cm); the Low Ground Pressure (LGP) configuration has a 60-inch (152-cm) track gauge. The 40A (60" gauge) has an approximate weight of 11,440 pounds, is 10 feet & 9/16" long and 6 feet and 6-1/8" inches wide.

Standard tractors were manufactured in the USA only, with a 39A and 54A serial number prefix.

LGP tractors were manufactured in the USA, with a 24A and 40A prefix, and in France, with a 55A and 69A prefix. The 24A and 69A only have 63 FWHP.

Production of 54A and 55A ended in 1962, 40A and 69A ended in 1963, 24A ended in 1964, and 39A ended in 1966.

The Caterpillar D4 series C was replaced by the Caterpillar D4D.
