The Caterpillar D4C Series III crawler tractor was introduced in 1993 as the replacement for the D4C II. It was manufactured in Japan only.

The D4C III has a 3046 naturally aspirated, six-cylinder engine producing 80 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It comes standard with air conditioning.

[edit] Configurations

It is available in two configuration: the standard model has a track gauge of 59 inches (150 cm); the Low Ground Pressure (LGP) configuration has a 66-inch (165-cm) track gauge. Standard tractors have a powershift-torque converter (PS-TC) planetary transmission. LGP tractors are available with a PS-TC or powershift-direct drive (PS-DD) planetary transmission. Both configurations have three-speeds forward, three-reverse.

Standard configuration tractors have a 6YL serial number prefix.

LGP configuration tractors have a 7SL and 8EL prefix.

In 1995, Caterpillar made modifications to the steering valve, beginning with 6YL00875, 7SL00268, and 8EL00074.

In 1997, Caterpillar introduced six new D4C III units, many of which came standard with hydrostatic drive and new dozer blades.

The new standard configuration tractors have 1FW, 6BS, 7NS, and 8CS prefixes.

The new LGP configuration tractors have 4LS and 6FS prefixes.

In 1997, Caterpillar added new dozer blades and made modifications to the undercarriage guards, beginning with 1FW00246, 6YL01990, and 7SL00674.

Also in 1997, modifications were made to the steering clutch brake lining material, beginning with 1FW00306, 6YL02064, 7SL00738, and 8EL00149.

Many modifications were made in 1998. Caterpillar added a turnbuckle blade anti-pitch link, beginning with 1FW00343, 4LS00262, 6BS00331, 6YL02108, 7SL00757, and 8CS00486. It added joystick hold control, beginning with 4LS00372, 6BS00453, 6FS00237, 7NS00313, and 8CS00721. Caterpillar modified the steering clutch control valves, beginning with 1FW00407, 6YL02196, 7SL00827, and 8EL00159.

Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 7,900 Caterpillar D4C Series III crawler tractors have been produced.
