The D4C II has a 3204 direct injection, four-cylinder engine producing 78 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It comes standard with sealed and lubricated tracks (SALT), a foot decelerator, segmented sprocket, and three speeds forward, three reverse powershift transmission.

Production of 1RJ and 2CJ ended in 1990. That same year Caterpillar introduced two new D4C II units as replacements, with a number of new features and increased horsepower to 80 FWHP. The new standard unit has a 7KG prefix; the LGP unit has a 9BG prefix.

The new models have wet clutches and brakes with two-pedal steering, three-valve hydraulics, single-lever dozer control, a new dash gauge, manual adjustable pitch, and a wider dozer blade.

Production of the D4C II ended in 1993.

The Caterpillar D4C II was replaced by the Caterpillar D4C III.
