The Caterpillar D5C crawler tractor was introduced in 1991. It was manufactured in Japan only.

The D5C has a 3204 direct injection, four-cylinder engine producing 90 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It comes standard with wet clutches and brakes with two-pedal or hand steering and a foot-operated decelerator, three valve hydraulics with single-lever dozer control, adjustable pitch, a 2.53-cubic yard (1.9-m3) blade, six-roller undercarriage, and three speeds forward, three reverse planetary transmission with torque converter.

It is available in two configurations: the standard model, with a 6PJ serial number prefix, has a track gauge of 61 inches (155 cm); the Low Ground Pressure (LGP) configuration, with a 3MK prefix, has a 68-inch (168-cm) track gauge.

Production of 3MK and 6PJ ended in 1993.

Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 1,200 Caterpillar D5C crawler tractors have been produced.
