The Caterpillar D5H crawler tractor was introduced in 1985 in France. Production began in Japan in 1986 and in Mexico in 1988.

[edit] Features

The D5H has a 3304 direct injection turbo, four-cylinder engine producing 120 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It comes standard with an elevated sprocket, multiple oil-cooled clutches and brakes, a sealed and lubricated track, and variable displacement load sensing hydraulics.

[edit] Configurations

It is available in two configurations: the standard model has a track gauge of 71 inches (180 cm); the Low Ground Pressure (LGP) configuration has an 85-inch (216-cm) track gauge. The transmission for a construction application tractor is a three speeds forward, three reverse powershift transmission; the agricultural version has a six speeds forward, six reverse direct drive transmission.

Standard configuration agricultural tractors were manufactured in France, with a 7NC serial number prefix, and in Japan, with a 1YD prefix. LGP configuration agricultural tractors were manufactured in France, with a 9HC prefix, and in Japan, with a 2SD prefix.

Standard configuration construction tractors were manufactured in France, with an 8RC prefix, and in Japan, with a 3MD prefix. LGP configuration construction tractors were manufactured in France, with a 1DD prefix, and in Japan, with a 4KD prefix.

The lone D5H tractor manufactured in Mexico has an 8SC prefix. It is a standard configuration, powershift unit.

[edit] Modifications

Production ended in Mexico in 1988.

In 1988, Caterpillar increased dozer blade height and capacity on all standard configuration tractors, beginning with 7NC00596, 8RC01436, 1YD00593, and 3MD00571.

In 1989, Caterpillar cast sided the case main frame, beginning with 1DD00695, 7NC00602, 8RC01866, 9HC00253, 1YD00613, 2SD00549, 3MD00699, and 4KD00507.

In 1990, Caterpillar introduced D5H Series II, which included the addition of a multiple-row module radiator, an extended rollover protection system (ROPS) canopy, rigid shear seals, power angle tilt dozer blade, and the singletree pin diameter was increased. Series II was marked in production with a 04000 serial number, beginning with 1DD04000, 7NC04000, 8RC04000, 9HC04000, 1YD04000, 2SD04000, 3MD04000, and 4KD04000.

In 1992, Caterpillar built a new interior, adding a fuel gauge and contour series seats. At the same time, all LGP units had their horsepower increased to 130 FWHP. These features were marked in production with a 05500 serial number, beginning with 1DD05500, 7NC05500, 8RC05500, 9HC05500, 1YD05500, 2SD05500, 3MD05500, and 4KD05500.

In 1992, Caterpillar introduced a new unit in France, with an 8RJ prefix. It is a standard configuration powershift tractor with all the Series II features included and 130 FWHP. It also comes with an eight percent longer track roller frame with seven rollers, a 65-gallon (246-L) fuel tank, electronic monitoring system (EMS), and straight-universal (SU) dozer blade.

In 1993 in France and 1994 in Japan, Caterpillar added a heavy-duty sealed and lubricated track, beginning with 1DD05878, 7NC05525, 8RC05890, 8RJ04217, 9HC05520, 1YD05523, 2SD05552, 3MD05598, and 4KD05589.

In 1993 in Japan and 1994 in France, Caterpillar replaced R12 Freon with R134A refrigerant in the air conditioning system, beginning with 1DD06006, 7NC05527, 8RC05967, 8RJ04387, 9HC05521, 1YD05522, 2SD05549, 3MD05594, and 4KD05585.

Production of 1YD ended in 1995.

Production in France ended in 1996.

Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 11,800 Caterpillar D5H crawler tractors have been produced.
