Caterpillar Crawler Tractors

The Caterpillar D6A crawler tractor was introduced in 1947. It was only manufactured in the USA.

[edit] Features

The D6A has a D318 six-cylinder engine with direct drive transmission, a forward/reverse lever, and six track rollers.

[edit] Configurations

It is available in two configurations. The narrower gauge model, given a 08U prefix, has a track gauge of 60 inches (152 cm). It was used primarily in agricultural applications as its 60-inch (152-cm) gauge is the “row crop” standard. A wider gauge version, with a 09U prefix, was designed with a track gauge of 74 inches (188 cm). It has become the standard model gauge for Caterpillar D6 crawler tractors, remaining unchanged in the latest D6R units.

[edit] Modifications

In 1953, Caterpillar replaced the dry clutch with an oil clutch, beginning with 08U06444 and 09U13263.

In 1954, the horsepower was increased to 93 flywheel horsepower (FHWP), beginning with 08U08010 and 09U17698.

In 1959, hydraulic track adjusters were added to the D6A, beginning with 08U10785 and 09U28328.

The Caterpillar D6A was replaced by the Caterpillar D6B.

Production of the D6A ended in 1959. Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 39,000 were produced.
