The Caterpillar M318 mobile excavator was introduced in 1994 in Germany.

The M318 has a Cat 3116 direct injection turbocharged engine producing 131 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It comes standard with a variable displace piston-type main pump and a closed loop swing pump.

The M318 was given an 8AL serial number prefix.

In 1997 and 1998 Caterpillar introduced two new M318 units, with a 6ES or 8SS prefix. They are both are equipped with material handler attachments.

The 6ES unit has a heavier frame and axles.

The 8SS unit has 135 horsepower, a hydraulically adjusted cab riser, maximum travel speed of 12 miles per hour (20 km/h).

Production of 6ES and 8AL ended in 2002; 8SS ended in 2005.

Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 4,000 Caterpillar M318 mobile excavators/material handlers have been produced.
