MAN AG, established in 1758, is the oldest company on the German Stock Exchange (DAX).[1] MAN manufactures heavy-duty transportation equipment and parts; namely buses, trucks, diesel engines, marine engines, compressors, and turbo-chargers. MAN won the “International Truck of the Year Award” in 2006 and 2008.[2] MAN’s headquarters are in Munich, Germany.[3]

Over the last 250 years, MAN has competed in a variety of industries. It started off as a steel production company, but has made significant contributions in other industries, such as advancing technology for the printing press, and inventing the world’s first diesel engine.[4]

MAN’s roots go back to 1758, when Franz Ferdinand Domherr Von Wenge founded St. Antony Ironworks. At the time it was the first industrial enterprise in the Ruhr region of Germany. Over the next 50 years the metal fabrication industry grew. In 1808 St. Antony Ironworks merged with two other German ironworks, forming a new company called “Gutehoffnungshütte Actienverein für Bergbau und Hüttenbetrieb” (GHH).[5]

The MAN brand name dates back to the turn of the 20th century. In 1898 two ironworks merged and formed a bigger company. In 1908 the company established the name Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nürnberg AG, or MAN for short. Initially, GHH and MAN were competing against each other in the industrial sector.[6]

[edit] World Wars

During World War I, both MAN and GHH were commissioned by the German government to make weapons, ammunition, and war vehicles. During the course of the war, MAN lost all of its foreign clients and patent rights, leaving the company in a weakened state when the fighting ceased. This prompted GHH to acquire MAN in 1921, forming the basis for the company as it exists today.

In the midst of the Great Depression in the 1930s the German government heavily promoted infrastructure projects in an effort to stimulate the economy. MAN shifted its production efforts towards shipbuilding, bridge construction, and diesel engine production for Navy vessels. At the end of the war, GHH was taken over by the allied forces. Much of the company was dismantled, including the steel production division, “Gutehoffnungshütte Aktienverein.”[7]

After the wars, the company shifted its attention away from military applications, and focused on transportation equipment. In 1955 the MAN Truck Plant opened. Over the next 50 years MAN expanded extensively with many mergers and acquisitions of other companies:

  • 1972: Acquisition of German truck maker AG Büssing.
  • 1980: Acquisition of Danish marine engine company B&W Diesel A/S.
  • 1986: Merger with steel producer “Gutehoffnungshütte Aktienverein,” which was a division of MAN before World War II. The company name was changed to MAN AG.
  • 1988: Acquisition of a 50 percent share in the French diesel engine manufacturer S.E.M.T. Pielstick.
  • 1991: Acquisition of Austrian tractor maker Steyr Nutzfahrzeuge AG.
  • 2000: Acquisition of Polish truck maker Star Trucks.
  • 2000: Acquisition of British truck maker ERF.
  • 2000: Acquisition of the diesel engine division of British power company Alstom.
  • 2000: Acquisition of the German Bus manufacturer Neoplan.
  • 2000: Acquisition of Swiss company Sulzer Turbo, which performs repairs and maintenence for industrial turbo equipment.
  • 2008: Acquisition of 15.6 percent of Swedish truck and bus company Scania AB, of which Volkswagen owns 68.6 percent.[8]
  • 2008: Acquisition of Volkswagen's Brazillian truck and bus operation. Volkswagen AG purchases 29 percent of MAN AG.  Widespread speculation that Volkswagen will merge with MAN AG.[9]

Today MAN has over 51,000 employees. Its headquarters still resides in Munich, Germany. Man is now a global presence, with operations in dozens of countries all around the world. Revenue for the year ending December 31, 2008 totalled €14.95billion ($19.68billion USD as of April 9, 2009).[11]

MAN is currently made up of six subsidiaries:

  • MAN Nutzfahrzeuge AG: Truck and bus manufacturer targeting Europe
  • MAN Diesel: Gasoline and diesel engine manufacturer for industrial purposes
  • MAN Turbo: Compressor and turbine manufacturer; applications for power generation and general industry
  • MAN Ferrostaal AG: Industrial services; builds power plants, chemical processing facilities, and other niche industrial applications
  • RENK AG: Industrial transmission and gear manufacturer
  • Volkswagen Trucks and Buses: Truck and bus manufacturer targeting South America and Africa

MAN sold 70 percent of MAN Feeostaal AG to International Petroleum Investment Company in October, 2008. CEO Håkan Samuelsson spoke of the sale: “With this step, MAN is now concentrating on the manufacturing industries in the field of transport-related engineering. This focus improves the conditions for sustainable growth in all our business areas.”[12]
