The Volvo G990 motor grader has a Volvo D9B turbocharged, aftercooled, six-cylinder, Tier-III/Stage-IIIA certified engine with V-ACT (Volvo Advanced Combustion Technology) producing 277 horsepower (HP). Its operating weight is 48,720 to 60,000 pounds (22,100 to 27,200 kg). It has a proportional demand flow hydraulic system with an axial piston pump delivering fluid at a rate of 55 gallons (208 L) per minute at a system pressure of 3,000 lbs per square inch (PSI) (20,684.3 kPa).

The G990 comes standard with a rear axle, operator controlled, lock/unlock differential with planetary final reduction; four-wheel wet disc braking system with crossover dual circuits and reserve power assist; electronic hand throttle with RPM (revolutions per minute) hold and resume functions; operator controlled power/speed engine mode; direct forward to reverse shuttle shift capability without using the inching pedal; automatic engine protection which lowers engine torque and speed if critical conditions occur; seven position blade control system for optimum blade mobility; twin gear direct drive circle turn system with impact protection; ten section hydraulic control valve; Volvo Care Cab with ergonomic controls; low profile cab with ROPS/FOPS; single transmission control level with electronic over speed protection, advanced memory shift, and park position lockout; transmission guard; and a direct drive, powershift Volvo HTE 840 transmission with eight forward and three reverse gears.

It also has all-wheel drive (AWD) with three drive systems in one: four-wheel tandem drive, six-wheel drive, and Creep Mode, which is a hydrostatic front-wheel-only drive system designed for fine grading control.
